Barr Gazetas - Award Winning London Architect

Yarnwicke City of London

Sensitive extension and refurbishment of a six-storey building in the heart of the City of London, providing vibrant workspaces with a variety of spaces and experiences.

In Numbers

  • 1 New storey
  • 204 New windows
  • 3 Fully fitted floors
  • 2 New roof terraces
  • 1 New communal roof terrace
  • 76 new full length linear lights

Our focus for the project was to balance the potential of the building with the surrounding historic context, maximising the massing where possible and improving the efficiency of the building.

We balanced the need for a respectful and traditional architecture where the new interventions interface directly with the Grade I listed St Mary Abchurch, and a more modern design language for the new roof extension and internal lightwell. This creates a variety of spaces within the revitalised building; exposed concrete waffle slab or CLT soffits; traditional sash windows, curtain walling or up and over eaves windows, open plan or small rooms; which gives this project a wealth of experiences.

The design of the fitted floors extend and enhance the overall design through the use of rich colours and materials. The feature walls double up as storage, and the entry desk stands out as a statement piece welcoming you into the space. The warm herringbone flooring gives way to a dynamic workspace with phone booths, bespoke furniture, meeting and break-out rooms and co-working areas that complete this flexible and welcoming space.

We have also completed a full building refurbishment; reconfigured cores, new windows, new exposed services, with a bold material palette that includes copper fixtures and fittings, delicate tile and timber cladding.

Our design has been woven around the history of the area, and with the new branding for the building
