Broadwalk House is a prominent feature of the Broadgate Estate. Internally the tired, dated public and office spaces had not been significantly refurbished since construction. We struck a balance between high impact design and careful material re-use, working closely with the client’s new tenant Monzo. Originally conceived as a ‘meanwhile’ five year scheme, Monzo has now let the vast majority of the building on longer terms, indicating the success of our tailored design approach.
We retained the ornate finishes and essence of the voluminous banking hall style reception, offset with contrasting edgier industrial touches, such as the ceiling light raft installations, and paired back finishes. Alongside the design work, we re-planned the way the reception operated, with targeted external lighting, better wayfinding and navigability to create a bright, airy and welcoming space where people now want to spend time.
“Our challenging process of material and infrastructure re-use resulted in a measured embodied carbon footprint of 58kgCo2/m2. To meet our client’s exacting sustainability targets, this was further offset through tree planting and soft landscaping in the wider Broadgate Estate.”

An ultra-low embodied carbon footprint was achieved through re-use and upcycling materials wherever possible. For example, we invested in replacing the reception floor, but retained and painted original timber panelling. For the seven storeys of office space, our clever, low cost refurbishment focussed around retained services with upcycled finishes. We also created new green roof terraces with a focus on biodiversity and wildlife.
