Client: London Borough of Waltham Forest
Location: Walthamstow, London
Category: Public Realm
Completed: 2018

Our winning entry for the Waltham Forest Council Making Places competition, The Long Table, is a community focus for events and gatherings on this bustling site in Chingford. An eight-metre-long yellow table and seating has been extruded up from the existing bland paving and will encourage multiple uses, some existing and some new.

A fortnightly food market is a vibrant community event but the site lacks activity and focus without it. Our installation will integrate into the market but will also encourage year round use whether just for casual meeting and chatting, community gatherings and displays or special events.

Designed to a strict budget, the installation must be designed to be durable, easily maintainable and demountable. The planting in the centrepiece and rear planters will be a combination of year-round species interspersed with seasonal planting and herbs to be maintained in conjunction with local community groups giving a sense of ownership. The whole installation is brightly coloured to create an oasis amongst the existing monochrome Albert Crescent landscape.
